Chekhov in Chinese

RUSSIAN dramatist Anton Chekhov’s famous drama “The Seagull” will be staged in Chinese at the Joy House Cinemas in the Pudong New Area for a week starting today.

It will be performed by the International Theater Workshop at the Shanghai Normal University. Director Ivan Ruviditch set up the workshop in 2015 to combine study and practise.

“Studies of dramatic literature should not be separated from performance,” said Ruviditch, a French sinologist who has spent 10 years in China. “Performance can help students get directly in touch with theater.”

“The Seagull,” first produced in 1896, is about the romantic and artistic conflicts between a playwright, an ingenue, a writer and an actress.
