Actors show their support for art house
CHINESE actors Wang Jingchun and Liao Fan said yesterday they are planning to open a movie center in Shanghai that will screen purely art house films.
“Most theaters these days show only big budget blockbusters, so Liao and I wanted to provide a place where young fans of the cinema can watch films with real charm and artistic value,” Wang said.
Wang and Liao, both of whom are graduates of the Shanghai Theater Academy, made the announcement on the sidelines of the 18th Shanghai International Film Festival.
The center should open this year, they said, without elaborating.
As well as screening movies by talented young filmmakers, the center will host related workshops and other events, said Wang, who in 2013 was named best actor at the 26th Tokyo International Film Festival for his role in “To Live and Die in Ordos.”
As well as backing from the two movie stars, the center will get financial support from the city government, said Hu Jinjun, director of the Shanghai Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and Television.
Also at the film festival yesterday, producer and entrepreneur Shi Jianxiang, one of the people behind “Ip Man 3” and “The Bombing,” announced plans for a new charity program that will provide educational grants to budding filmmakers.
