AACTA launches Asia International Engagement Program

DURING the ongoing 20th Shanghai International Film Festival, the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) today announced the launch of the Asia International Engagement Program.

The program in China will cooperate with Shanghai International Film Festival. It will also be the introduction of the AACTA Award for Best Asian Film, recognizing excellence in filmmaking throughout the Asian region.

Officials said that the program aims to promote the skills and achievements of Australian screen practitioners in Asia and further develop pathways for collaborations between Australia and our Asian neighbors.

"As the Asian screen industry continues to grow and the traditional borders to content distribution are breaking down, audiences across the world are discovering what other regions have to offer," said AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella. "There is strong audience demand for Asian cinema in Australia with over 200 films from neighboring Asian countries released theatrically here in 2016 alone and an increase in co-productions between Western and Asian filmmakers. Our Program seeks to bring the best and the brightest from both regions to new audiences."

The inaugural Best Asian Film Award will be presented at the 2017 AACTA Awards on December 6 at the Star Event Center in Sydney. The finest Asian films of the last 12 months will be honored.

A Grand Jury of highly regarded film industry leaders from around the world will determine the recipient of the Best Asian Film Award. Oscar and AACTA award-winning actor Russell Crowe will act as the President of the Asian Film Grand Jury. Chinese film maker Lu Chuan and Chinese actor Liu Ye will also join the jury panel this year.
