‘A Life for Painting’ to display Renoir oeuvre

AN exhibition of 44 works by French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir will open to the public on Saturday at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.

Titled “A Life for Painting,” the show is the first “large-scale display” of the artist’s work ever to be staged in the city, according to its organizer Tix-Media.

The collection, which has been brought together from 14 museums across Europe and the United States, includes 28 oil paintings, 15 works in chalk, pencil and ink, and one sculpture.

Among the highlights are “The Garden in Montmartre,” “Nude” and “The Concert.”

Xie Dingwei, a director at Tix-Media, which also organized an exhibition of Claude Monet’s works in Shanghai last year, said interest in art from the Impressionist period, which was started by a group of artists living in Paris in the 19th century, is high among local people.

“Impressionist works have always been loved by the public. Like the Claude Monet exhibition last year, this year’s show features a single artist, so we have selected pieces taken from different stages in his life,” he said.

The Monet exhibition, which was held at the K11 shopping center, attracted almost 400,000 visitors over three months, and Xie said he is expecting the Renoir show to be equally popular.

“I’ll definitely be going to see the Renoir exhibition,” local office worker Zhang Danli told Shanghai Daily.

“When we go traveling abroad, I always try to get to see the works of the masters at the local museums. Now they’re coming to Shanghai, there’s no reason to miss them,” she said.

The event will open to the media on Friday, when the guest of honor will be Jacques Renoir, the artist’s great-grandson, who will talk about some of the works on show.

The event, at the West No. 2 Hall of the Shanghai Exhibition Center, runs until March 6, next year. Admission is 100 yuan (US$16) per person during the week, 120 yuan at the weekend, and 80 yuan with a discounted ticket purchased online.
