107-year-old bridge to be renovated

WORK will start next weekend to dismantle Zhejiang Road Bridge at Suzhou Creek for major renovations lasting a year, an official said.

Because there are other bridges across the creek, traffic shouldn’t be affected, said officials.

The revamp will fix structural problems on the steel structure that dates back to 1908, while keeping its original look, said Qian Cheng, project manger for the renovation work.

The bridge will be transported by truck to a workshop 100 meters away for the renovation.

This is the second steel bridge across the creek to be dismantled and renovated, following Waibaidu Bridge.

“Though the bridge still looks in good condition, underneath it is severely rusted and thorough renovations are necessary,” Qian said.

The bridge, which has seen heavy use over the years, has undergone various renovations in recent years — including a major project in 2008 when the structure was covered with anti-rust paint.

The work about to start will ensure that the bridge can be used for another 50 years, Qian said.

To ensure the bridge can be perfectly assembled again after work, engineers will first make three-dimensional scans of the structure.

It will take more than a month to dismantle the bridge, said Qian.

The bridge will be stabilized to prevent it from falling apart during the dismantling, before a ship transports it piece by piece to trucks.

The Zhejiang Road Bridge is a city-level protected cultural relics. It is the second oldest bridge across the Suzhou Creek — a year younger than the Waibaidu Bridge.
