Water bombs, falling magnets attract 500 high school students

MORE than 500 high school students and teachers gathered at a science summer camp today at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which aims to use university resources to help high school students cultivate scientific interests and competencies.
During the seven-day camp, high school students from 11 provinces and cities, including Hong Kong and Macau, will attend lectures given by Jiao Tong University professors and carry out scientific research and experiments with the help of college students.
"Students will have the opportunity to use advanced lab facilities such as high-speed cameras that most high schools do not own," said Li Sheng, a teacher in the department of physics and astronomy of Jiao Tong.
During the camp activities today, the students studied the principle of water bombs, observed the shape of freezing droplets and compared the speed of magnets between free fall and fall in an iron tube.
Li said the science summer camp forms a good bridge between high school and university education, which are quite different education style.
