University to provide Internet gateway to inspirational talks
AS part of its efforts to support the city’s ambitions to become a global center for innovation, the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology will in the future upload to the Internet videos of speeches and presentations made by its alumni.
“In the past, the lectures — which we hold monthly at the university — were accessible only to a small group of people,” said Zhu Jianmin, dean of teaching affairs.
“But online, they’ll be available to anyone who wants to learn how to set up a business.”
Zhu did not say when the videos would be available or whether they would be available free of charge.
The university said only that it had signed a cooperation agreement on the issue with language teaching website hujiang.com.
The lectures and presentations will be made by the university’s former students, many of whom are now successful businesspeople, Zhu said, adding that “at least 50” will be recorded and put online this year.
The university said it will also create a platform for people to promote their business and product ideas, and where experts and academics can provide feedback.
While President Xi Jinping only recently issued his call for Shanghai to become a center for innovation, the science and technology university said it has long nurtured its creative students.
In 2012, 30 undergraduates majoring in machine design and manufacturing, and automation engineering were put in a single class in the hope they would inspire one another, the university said.
The exercise proved a great success, as 20 of them went on to set up their own companies, while several others won prizes for their scientific and technological achievements, the university said.
