Universities go for uniform evaluation

FOUR top universities in Shanghai yesterday announced a uniform evaluation process of high school students for the next academic year.

The announcement puts into effect a college admission scheme that was declared two years ago. It is the first time the education authorities will run an official system that will comprehensively reflect students’ characters — morality, health, interests, special skills and social practices. The system will be used for college admissions under the education reform piloted in Shanghai and Zhejiang Province.

Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Tongji and East China Normal Universities said yesterday at a news conference that they would use the information to study applicants for all their enrollment programs.

“Students don’t have to submit separate resumes or other materials as before to show their strengths,” said Ding Guanghong, director of the admission office of Fudan University. “We will submit the list of applicants to the education authorities to obtain their information in the unified system and distribute to interviewers before interviews.”

Universities may also advise applicants to change courses or colleges, based on the evaluation information if they have opted for something that might not best suit them.

Other universities will release details of their admission plans before the end of year.
