Students encouraged to give old bikes to charity

AUTHORITIES at Shanghai Jiao Tong University are encouraging students that no longer want their bicycles to donate them to a charitable society.

The Green Love House project makes unloved machines available to less-wealthy students who would otherwise be unable to afford one.

Chen Entao, a teacher at the university, said that lots of bikes are abandoned by students when they leave as they are not worth transporting home.

“They’re only worth about 50 yuan (US$8) secondhand,” he said.

Some small businesses used to buy the frames and convert them into motorbikes, but the local government no longer allows that, so the demand is almost nil, he said.

Giving the bikes to the society, therefore, is a great idea, he said.

A similar system is also under way at Fudan University.

At its Jiangwan Campus, unwanted bicycles are made available to anyone who wants to use them.

Meanwhile, East China Normal University’s Minhang Campus, said it plans to sell its abandoned bicycles to recycling companies.

It had almost 1,100 unwanted bikes last year and has dealt with more than 300 already this month, it said.
