Student games expand
DRAGON boat racing, martial arts, curling and a dozen other sports games will be introduced to this year’s Shanghai Students Sports Meeting.
Organizers said the number of competitive sports had almost doubled from the last time such an event was held four years ago.
The sports meeting organized by local education commission and sport bureau for all students of local schools and universities, the third of its kind, is open to international college students for the first time — but only for martial arts, dragon boat racing, table tennis and badminton. The aim is to help foreign students to better understand Chinese culture as well as promoting the four activities internationally.
Nearly 30,000 students have registered and will compete in different age groups from now to the end of November. Winners will be awarded on December 7 at a closing ceremony.
“All the new games are added because many students love playing as the city has been encouraging schools to promote sports among students,” said Guo Bei, an official of Shanghai Sport Bureau said. “For example, about 200 schools promote chess.”
She also pointed out that Shanghai has been hosting high-level international sports games in recent years that had attracted large numbers of enthusiasts.
Guo also said the performances of high school students would be recorded in the city’s comprehensive evaluation system and would be noted in the college admission process.
