Shanghai to promote education reforms in 11 other cities

SHANGHAI signed cooperation agreements on Friday with 11 cities and prefectures in seven midwest provinces in China to help to promote education reform and teachers’ development.

The 11 agreements, covering three years, involve 65 specific programs and will benefit more than 220 pre-university schools in the midwest, including Hubei, Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet, Qinghai and Xinjiang.

According to the agreements, exchange visits and communications will be organized, textbooks and teaching methods will be introduced to schools, and training for teachers as well as professional consultation will also be provided.

Teachers and school administrators will be invited to Shanghai to observe the city’s educational procedures.

Jia Wei, deputy director of the Shanghai Education Commission, said the cooperation agreements were part of Shanghai’s role in initiating the pilot of national educational reform.

The city has been asked by the Ministry of Education to develop replicable models for other areas.

Jia said all 16 districts in Shanghai would provide their most successful and mature teaching programs, most of which had won awards in national educational competitions.
