Shanghai falls to 39th spot on student city list

SHANGHAI is the 39th “Best Student City” in the world, according to a poll released yesterday.

According to the research by British company Quacquarelli Symonds, the city ranked 10th for “employer activity” — a measure of job opportunities for graduates — up from 16th in the previous poll.

In the “University ranking” sub-list, it came 17th, down from 16th a year earlier.

Six Shanghai seats of higher learning, led by Fudan University, are covered by the survey.

The city performed poorly on the “Student Mix” and “Desirability” categories, ranking 71st and 63rd respectively.

The former is a measure of the total number of international students and what proportion of the total student body represent.

The city also did badly on the “Affordability” scale — falling to 28th from 11th last year, according to the survey.

Living costs are fairly high, the survey said, citing the Mercer Cost of Living Survey that ranks Shanghai as the 6th most expensive city in the world.

Tatiana Skuratova, a 21-year-old Russian student at Tongji University, told Shanghai Daily that her basic monthly spending had risen by about 1,000 yuan (US$156) over the past three years to 3,500 yuan. She blamed the increase on costlier accommodation and higher taxi fares.
