School study to assess health benefits of sports

EXACTLY what role does sports play in childhood development and how can that positive impact be maximized?

To find out, Shanghai is launching a study in September that will look at 20,000 students at 20 local primary and middle schools. The information gathered will be used to develop formal guidance on children’s physical education, which will be adopted under a three-year public health plan.

It will be the first research program focused on the physical benefits of school sports and the development of the best format for achieving them, health experts said over the weekend at a pediatrics forum in the city.

“We all know sports can enhance health and improve study efficiency, but we don’t have actual evidence on how and what kind of sports can improve children’s health,” said Dr Jiang Fan from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, which will lead the study.

“So the research will focus on children in different ages to find the best exercise format and intensity for them. The 20 schools will be divided into two groups for comparative study to work out guidance in line with Chinese children’s growth and physical condition.”

She said the physical condition of local students has been declining in recent years. Myopia and obesity, for example, are on the rise.

“Even though all parents and schools know the importance of sports, there is no guideline for how long and what type of sports children should do to enhance their health and ability to perform well academically,” she said.

“Our research will involve following these children and using a sports-monitoring bracelet to study the relationship between physical exercise and their health and academic performance.”
