International universities to attend education expo this weekend

REPRESENTATIVES of more than 300 schools and educational organizations from 30 countries and regions will appear at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center this weekend to participate the China Education Expo, including France, Germany, the UK and USA.

The expo, hosted by China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), has been staged for 16 years since 2000, providing a direct and authoritative platform for Chinese students to meet with school officials and education authorities of participating countries. It also offers an opportunity for countries and schools to showcase latest policies, programs, courses and curriculum.

As Ireland will be awarded the prestigious role of “Country of Honor” for this year’s event, a total of 19 Irish universities will show up, including seven listed at top 500 world comprehensive universities, such as Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and National University of Ireland, Galway.

There are more than 5,000 Chinese students studying at universities in Ireland, up 10 percent from last year and second only the number of American students there.

More than 40 British schools will attend to event as the largest country group, including universities, prep schools, language schools and independent senior schools.

As UK planned to increase the number of international students by 20 percent in five years and removed the limitation on enrollment number for local universities, Chinese students see more opportunities to enter top British schools.

These will include 15 boarding senior schools. China is now the second largest source of international students in boarding senior schools in the UK, as the number of Chinese students there has increased from fewer than 2,500 in 2007 to about 4,500 in 2014.

Experts believed that the UK will continue to be a popular destination for Chinese students who wish to go abroad for study as the British government introduced favorable policies and its currency has been devalued after it exited from the European Union.

More than 40 American schools will also show up in the expo led by the US Embassy to provide lectures about latest visa policies and study information.

America has been the most popular overseas study destination for Chinese students. These year, more than 300,000 students from Chinese mainland entered American schools, up 10.8 percent from last year and accounting for 31.2 percent of all international students in America.

Some countries, such as Costa Rica and Portugal, attended the expo for the first time as seeing opportunities after China introduced the “One Belt, One Road” strategy and other policies, which caused higher demand for talents of less used languages.

Visitors can register for free tickets via the expo’s website, WeChat and Weibo accounts.
