International universities court China candidates

UNIVERSITIES and organizations from countries that have not traditionally been popular destinations for Chinese students attended the annual China International Education Exhibition Tour for the first time.
Organized by the China Service Center for Scholarly Exchange of the Ministry of Education, the exhibition tour kicked off in Beijing on May 7 and arrived in Shanghai, its fourth stop, yesterday with about 90 schools and educational organizations.
Four universities from the United Arab Emirates took part in the event for the first time.
Ekaterina Ivanova, student recruitment and admission adviser for Australia’s University of Wollongong in Dubai, said the school decided to take part because there has been an increase in the number of Chinese students who would like to study in Dubai.
“I have been working in the university for five years,” she said. “Five years ago, there were no students from China studying at our university, but in the last three years, every year it’s getting more and more and more.”
The university was established in 1993 and is now one of the most famous campuses in Dubai, attended by more than 4,000 students from over 100 countries and regions.
“We’ve seen the number of Chinese students coming to the UAE in the past three years increase from 300 to around 800,” said Liu Xin, a manager at Dubai-based Oriental Wise Educational Consultancy.
The number of students the company has helped to enroll at universities in Dubai has increased from five or six a year at the end of the last decade to between 60 and 80 in recent years.
According to Liu, nearly 95 percent of international students can find jobs in Dubai after graduation now with starting salaries for those with bachelor’s degrees of around 7,000 yuan (US$1,070) per month.
A mother, surnamed Hou, whose daughter is in grade 10, said: “We had been aiming at American schools and never thought about the UAE before. But after hearing their introduction, I think it’s not a bad idea to let my daughter apply at one or two branches of famous western universities. As so many people around the world are doing business in and travelling to Dubai, I think it’s promising for her to work there after graduation.”
