Immunologists from America and Japan awarded in town for fundamental discoveries

TWO immunologists from America and Japan were presented the first Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Awards over the week end and will share a 3 million yuan prize.
One of the winners was 68-year-old James P. Allison, a professor of the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas. He was awarded for his fundamental discovery that blocking CTLA-4 can unleash T cells of the immune system to attack cancer cells and for the development of an antibody against CTLA-4 as the first immuno-oncology therapy, which has saved thousands of lives.
And the other winner was 74-year-old Tasuku Honjo, a professor of Kyoto University. He was honored for his fundamental discovery of PD-1 as an inducible gene in activated T-lymphocytes and his subsequent research revealing PD-1 as a negative regulator of immune responses. He demonstrated that PD-1 inhibition contributes to cancer treatments and the anti-PD-1 canter immunotherapy has been approved in US, EU and Japan.
This treatment revolutionalized the cancer therapy and is considered to be equivalent to penicillin in infectious diseases.
The Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award was jointly founded by Fudan University and Zhongzhi Enterprise Group in 2015 to recognize the global scientists who have made fundamental and distinguished achievements in the fields of Mathematics, Physics and Biomedicine.
