Heavy rains predicted on second day of exams

THE second day of the annual national college entrance exams, or “Gaokao,” is likely to be stormy with weather forecasters predicting a deluge with a rain belt moving northwards.
Students appearing for the exams are being advised to head to their centers early to avoid the possibility of traffic jams because of the weather.
The morning thundershowers will last until afternoon but will taper off in the evening. The two-day exams are likely to end with overcast skies and mild temperatures in low twenties.
More than 51,000 students sat for their exams yesterday in perfect sunshine. Police spread across the city to ensure the perfect start for students who are vying for some 41,000 seats in local universities and colleges.
This year, more students have shown interest in the science stream while there has been a drop in liberal arts. The number of those seeking entry into science went up by 2,000 to 32,000. The liberal arts dropped by 3,000 from last year to 19,000.
“We took a bus to come here in the morning and did not face any traffic problems. We got here at 8am, an hour early,” said a 73-year-old man, surnamed Zhu, who was waiting outside the exam center at Xuhui High School for his grandson.
Zhu’s wife was only worried about the rain today. “We should leave home earlier than today,” she said.
Another woman, surnamed Deng, said she booked a hotel room for two days near Shanghai No.4 High School. “She can do her studies for the exams in a quiet environment and not worry about getting stuck on the way due to rain or other things,” she said.
Traffic police officers and traffic assistants were stationed outside schools and exam venues to ease the traffic.
