For most students, exams go smoothly
OVER 51,000 students are sitting this year’s college entrance examination, which started yesterday and finishes today, and various government departments have done their level best to make things run smoothly.
Traffic police were dispatched to the city’s 83 exam venues before 7am, two hours before the start, to direct traffic and help students.
Two anxious students who mistakenly went to the wrong venue in the Pudong New Area were rescued by police, officials said.
The students, a male and a female, were scheduled to sit their tests yesterday morning at 8.15am at Shanghai Jianping Century Middle School but went to Jianping High School instead.
When police became aware of their predicament, two officers drove them to the right exam site, and even adjusted the timing of the traffic lights so they would not have to lose time by stopping on the way.
Temporary parking spaces have been allocated near the exam venues and the police have deployed motorcycle teams to patrol around the sites. At Xuhui High School in Xujiahui, one of the exam sites, Shanghai Daily found a line of five police cars, including a SWAT vehicle, and several police motorcycles standing by. About a dozen officers milled about in front.
Parents waiting outside the school told Shanghai Daily that everything had gone smoothly.
A Putuo police official said a temporary parking lot was created on neighboring Fushui Road with space for nearly 100 vehicles. The force also dispatched 12 officers to the school to direct traffic and deal with emergencies.
“This year we also ordered officers to control the traffic lights,” said the official. “When there is congestion, they can adjust the timing.”
In Jing’an District, temporary parking lots were set up near all exam venues and police launched a crackdown on honking during the two-day exam.
In Songjiang District, a student who left his ID card at home couldn’t enter the exam site — Shanghai Songjiang No.2 High School — and had to get his parents to fetch it for him. However, when his parents failed to get it to him in time, officers used their police PDA to verify his identity and let him enter.
