Education ministry plans to improve student fitness
A SERIES of measures will be strengthened to help students improve their physical fitness as overweight and obesity rates continue to rise across the country, a Ministry of Education official said in Shanghai today.
Wang Dengfeng, director of the ministry’s physical, health and arts education department, spoke at a press conference for the 12th National Student Sports Games, which begin tonight at the Oriental Sports Center in Pudong.
Wang said the fitness of students has decreased in the past 25 years. In order to change the situation, new evaluation systems must be established to make students, parents and educators refocus on physical education, he said.
He said some provinces have included PE scores in academic tests that are important references for college admissions. He said the concept could be promoted nationwide. Meanwhile, there are pilot schemes that link PE performances with the salaries of principals in an effort to ensure schools don’t neglect physical education.
In Shanghai, nearly 20 percent of students are obese or overweight, according to the Shanghai Education Commission.
