Contest aims to find future scientists
A contest to find “future scientists” has attracted high school student applications from across the country.
The event, the 16th of its kind, is being held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University this week and is jointly organized by China Association for Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the H.S. Chau Foundation to cultivate a talent force for scientific and technological innovation. This is the first time the event has been held outside Beijing.
The event received 883 applications from high school students with research programs, and 98 will enter the final selection process from today to Saturday.
A panel of about 60 members of the two academies and other senior experts will question potential recruits face to face as well as watching their performances in group discussions.
The judges will evaluate students with standards for their scientific thinking, innovative ability and interests.
Several members of the two academies and 1995 Nobel laureate Eric Francis Wieschaus, an American developmental biologist, will also interact with the finalists, encouraging them to share their personal stories and career experiences.
Students will also be invited into major labs in Jiao Tong to have a taste of research at the university and they will also be able to use its innovation center to bring their own creative ideas to reality, such as assembling a robot.
Three winners will be awarded the title of “Future Scientist” on Saturday, each winning 50,000 yuan (US$7,385) of scholarship funds, while a further 95 students will win prizes and scholarships ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 yuan.
The schools of winners will also be granted bonuses for their contribution and to encourage them to continue inspiring students’interests and potentiality in science as well as driving their development.
