Youth escort available aiming to aid children flying unaccompanied
Staff at the local Pudong airport are now beginning to escort youth flying solo to check in and receive security checks while sending them to flight attendants of their airlines at the boarding gates, the airport authority stated today.
During the school holidays, a lot of local children have no one to look after them during the days or weeks and so their parents tend to send them to stay with their grandparents or other relatives. Many of the children have to take flights alone since their parents either have no time to accompany their children or simply want to save money, according to the airport.
It is estimated that more than 10,000 children living in Shanghai take unaccompanied airline flights every summer.
Many airlines have offered services to accompany children in the air but flight attendants hardly take care of them at the airport before they pass the boarding gate.
The Pudong airport staff will act as temporary guardians to the children once dropped off from their parents at the airport. Once in the custody of the airport, parents can rest assured that their children are in safe hands, an official with the airport later added.
A staff member will firstly check the luggage for them to evade bringing any prohibited items and will accompany them throughout the entire security check process while later escorting them onto their respective flights.
Passengers, who need the service, can contact their airlines and the airport authority will share the information with the carriers and start their service at the terminal building.
Most airlines do not impose any additional fees for the caring of minors, though Air China does charge 200 yuan when doing so on international flights.
In the air, the children are given seats at the front of the cabin and near the aisle so that the flight crew can easily keep a close eye on them.
For safety reasons, they are never given seats next to adult males.
Furthermore, on arrival at their destination, the youngsters are escorted off the plane and given to whoever is there waiting for them.
