Work on new tunnel set to begin

CONSTRUCTION will begin early next month on a new tunnel that is expected to ease traffic congestion in the Caohejing area during rush hours, officials said yesterday.

The 86-meter tunnel under Tianlin Road, which will have three vehicle lanes and two bicycle lanes, will be a major artery between Xuhui and Minhang districts when it is completed at the end of 2018, said the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co, which is in charge of the construction work.

Drivers and pedestrians on Tianlin Road currently have to detour to parallel streets because the Middle Ring Road cuts the road off, causing congestion, especially during rush hours.

The company will dig the tunnel under the Middle Ring Road without affecting traffic, said engineer Wang Huang.
