Water environment in city downtown rated excellent

More than 300 water pollution problems in river courses were spotted in the second half of last year in Shanghai’s downtown areas, mainly concerning floating pollutants, officials revealed yesterday.

Another 191 problems over pollution in nearby river courses in the city’s downtown were also found, most related to greenery pollution, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

Overall, the water environment and sanitation in the city’s downtown was rated “excellent,” and it was “good” in suburban areas, according to the bureau.

The evaluation covered 785 river courses in downtown, and 2,430 in the suburbs, it said.

The problems were in 13 areas such as floating pollutants, aquatic plant pollution, public facilities, greenery pollution and pollution near garbage bins, the bureau said.

In the suburbs, 4,191 problems of water pollution of river courses and 3,542 pollution problems in nearby river courses were detected, regarding floating pollutants and intertidal zone sediment, and greenery and road pollution respectively, the bureau said.

Huangpu, Xuhui, Jing’an, Putuo, Changning, Hongkou, Minhang, Baoshan, Jiading, Chongming, Yangpu and Songjiang districts were rated “excellent” for water environment, with the rest “good.”
