Wartime memories to be displayed at future exhibition in Shanghai Mass Art Center

To commemorate China’s 70th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-fascist War, local citizens are encouraged to display their family wartime collections at an upcoming exhibition at the Shanghai Mass Art Center.

The exhibition, a program of this year's Shanghai Citizens Art Festival, will be held from August 13 to September 13. It will show the efforts of Chinese people in resisting aggression, fighting for peace and freedom.

Officials from the Shanghai Mass Art Center, an organizer of the exhibition, said that to date, several hundred items have been selected from the collections of citizens.

Among them are serial wartime magazines, postcards, old photos, albums and paintings.

One of the most eye-catching items is an old album of the ”March of the Volunteers”, sung by the celebrated American singer Paul Robeson more than 70 years ago. The song later became the National Anthem of China.

The exhibition will also put on displaying photos and donation certificates of Feng Sunmei, a patriotic local intellectual who has held many previous events in the 1930s and 40s to raise funds for domestic war refugees.

Additionally, Zuo Xuchu, a collector of domestic trademarks and historic daily commodities, will exhibit a considerable number of domestic wartime products and packages that were produced to boycott Japanese goods.

The products include homemade costumes, medicine and condiment.

"I have spent around 40 years collecting these items," said the 58-year-old Zuo. "Each item tells a story. It demonstrates the strong determination of Chinese people in resisting aggression."
