Volunteer program seeks college students to teach seniors smartphone skills

THE Shanghai Gerontological Society is searching for university students as volunteers to teach seniors interested in intelligent lifestyle on how to use WeChat in a public welfare program.

The Jing'an District has started the trial and the aim is to cover 1 million seniors citywide in three to five years, the society said today.

"With the rapid development of new technologies, many elderly people has the desire to enjoy the fun of uploading photos, chatting and sharing their life experience on WeChat's friend circle like youngsters, but many of their children are too busy or are not patient to teach them," said Sun Pengbiao, secretary general of the society.

There will be free courses and the application hotline to be volunteers is 62173938.

So far, there are 200 university students becoming volunteers of the project.

The project was revealed today at the China International Exhibition of Senior Care, Rehabilitation Medicine and Healthcare at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in the Pudong New Area.

Meanwhile, a number of products such as intelligent wall lamp allowing seniors to call for help by touching it were awarded in the exhibition today.
