US doctors trained in Shanghai

A TEAM of two fellow doctors and two teachers from Prentice Women’s Hospital of Northwestern University of United States returned to their home over the weekend after receiving two-week training for cervical cancer surgery at Shanghai Tumor Center, which handles the largest number cervical cancer surgeries in China.

The two fellow doctors were also the first batch of trainers under the training exchange program between Shanghai Tumor Center and the university’s department of obstetrics and gynecology.

“There are very small number of cervical cancer surgeries in the United States, while surgery amount here is so huge that we can learn many technologies and concept in Shanghai Tumor Center, which also removes cervical cancer with fertility-preserving therapy,” said Dr Brandon-Luke Seagle, one of the fellow doctor. “It is very helpful for us.”

Dr Wu Xiaohua, director of Shanghai Cancer Center's gynecology department, said a lack of a gynecological oncologist training and recognition system in China greatly impairs professional development and results of surgery, though Chinese doctors have more patients and more clinical practices.

“We must learn from developed countries like the US, which has a perfect gynecological oncologist training and cultivation system,” he said. “Gynecological cancer like cervical cancer usually spreads to other organs. Doctors must learn how to cut and remove cancers tissues from other organs during a gynecological cancer surgery. In China, we don’t have such training system, so most gynecologists haven’t received such training. Such restriction affects the final effects of a surgery.”
