US ambassador congratulates Chinese students on visa success

United States Ambassador to China, Max Baucus, met six Chinese who were granted student visas this morning at the US Consulate General in Shanghai on Nanjing Road W. during his visit to the city.

Baucus congratulated the college students. He said the US welcomed Chinese students and told the students they are ambassadors of China to Americans.

Chinese students account for the largest group of international students in the US. Last year, more than 246,000 Chinese students and exchange scholars were issued visas to the US, up 13.7 percent from the year before, according to figures released by the US Consulate General in Shanghai.

In Shanghai, more than 95 percent of student applicants are successful in their visa applications, said John M. Grondelski, visa unit chief of the US Consulate General in Shanghai.

Grondelski said tourists are still the greatest number of visa applicants, accounting for 80 percent of the total. Students come as second at 15 percent, and the remaining are business people, journalists, diplomats and religious workers.
