THE fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia or CICA has begun in Shanghai. Nearly 40 countries and international organizations are attending the meeting.

China will be taking over the presidency for the next two years until 2016. Qatar has become the 25th member of the CICA.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will deliver a keynote speech at the summit explaining China’s stance on security in Asia and the future development of the forum. He will also call on regional leaders to join hands in dealing with regional security threats and challenges.

Meanwhile, the CICA secretariat has just signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to jointly promote regional security.

Experts say the summit will strengthen dialogue, build mutual trust and broaden cooperation among Asian countries and help the region address some burning issues.
