Thousands run in Shanghai Half Marathon in Pudong

Three thousand and five hundred runners took part in the 2015 Shanghai Half Marathon, a new running event held in the Pudong New Area this morning.

Apart from the open-to-all 21-kilometer race, the event also featured a 12km run only for women, which gave out 1,500 quotas. Both races started at Oriental Pearl TV Tower at 6:30am and end at the Oriental Sports Center.

Li Wei, a 26-year-old sports teacher became the first runner to cross the finish line of the men’s half marathon, clocking 1 hour eight minutes and 32 seconds.

Li said he had been trying to register for the popular Shanghai International Marathon for years, but never succeeded. After managing to clinch a spot in the inaugural Shanghai Half Marathon, he made a trip all the way from Shandong Province to take part in the Shanghai event.

“All the enthusiastic spectators created an exciting atmosphere for us runners despite the moist and sultry weather,” Li said.

The organizers -- same organizers of the annual Shanghai International Marathon -- hope the new events will provide another platform for those who find it difficult to clinch a spot at the autumn marathon event, which is scheduled for November 8 this year.

Also, the 12km run was introduced for women participants who find 21km too challenging, but don’t want to be excluded from the sport which owns a soaring popularity in Shanghai.
