Teen detained for sabotaging Metro train doors, causing repeat rush-hour delays

SHANGHAI police have detained a teenager for malfunctions on Metro networks that affected services during rush hours.

Train door malfunctions occurred frequently on Metro Lines 2, 7, 10 and 13 last month, leading to suspicion that it was being deliberately sabotaged.

The Metro operator Shanghai Shentong Group reported its suspicion to police, who launched an investigation.

Police studied the surveillance camera footage and zeroed in on a male suspect. They caught him on January 28 at Line 10’s Jiangwan Stadium station, while he was trying to commit a similar offense.

The Metro operator said 10 train door malfunctions were reported on four lines in four days from January 25 to January 28.

The 17-year-old suspect said he was doing it “just for fun.” He used a small home-made tool to stop the train doors from closing properly delaying the trains. He would leave before the Metro staff came to investigate.
