Suspects detained in second-hand products trading scam

FIVE suspects involved in a fraud of 70,000 yuan (US$10,300) against users of “Xianyu”, a mobile app where users trade second-hand products, have been detained, Shanghai police said yesterday.

The suspects, based in Nanchang city of Jiangxi Province, allegedly feigned to be buyers on the app to contact the sellers and defrauded them up to thousands of yuan by linking them to a fishy website with fake customer services which charged “trading fees.”

There were at least 50 victims from different parts of the country, police said.

Police in Jiading District started investigation earlier this month when a woman complained to them that she lost 3,000 yuan to the fraudsters the first time she used the app.

The woman, surnamed Sun, said she clicked on the fishy link in an email which the “buyer” said was sent from the “official customer service” after she posted a second-hand ring through the app.
