Sunshade pattern design competition concludes

AS many people are staying in air-conditioned rooms these days to escape the scorching heat, a competition trying to bring people outdoors to enjoy the summer breath by creative sunshade pattern designs concluded in Shanghai on Friday.

Li Shaotian, a 22-year-old sophomore at Guangdong University of Technology, won the champion and 30,000 yuan of prize at the awarding ceremony of the YoungBird "Shade-scape" Sunshade Pattern Design Competition 2017.

With a reference to silhouette and European church domes, his design “City and Shadow” uses silhouettes of landmark buildings of a city on the sunshade leaves, making people feel like under the high-rises when looking up.

Using translucent fabrics provided by Sunbrella, a fabrics company and co-organizer of the competition, people can also see shadow of the pattern when sunlight reaches certain intensity and play with it.

By his design, Li wished not only to make the sunshade part of a unique cityscape, but also to inspire users to slow down a little bit to enjoy life and explore new things.

It was highly praised by the jury panel.

“This is a very dynamic design which will look great from either side,” said Greg Voorhis, one of the judges and design director of Sunbrella Custom Fabrics. “The bold shape of the buildings will make it stand out from either far away or close up.”

“I also believe this is a great opportunity to be able to do custom designs of specific city skylines that would be related to where you live,” he added.

The competition received 369 entries by 546 competitors from 25 countries.

The other two of the three finalists were Colombian architect Samuel Silva Batista and Australian architect Huan Khoo.

Batista used the pattern of palm tree in his design, while Khoo designed with the theme of Gradient of Sun.
