Students moved over track scare
Over 200 children from a kindergarten in Minhang District were shifted to another campus after their parents blamed a newly-laid running track for causing allergic reactions.
It is the latest incident to rock kindergartens. Similar cases have been reported earlier in Songjiang District in Shanghai and in several places in neighboring Jiangsu Province which had to suspend outdoor activities amid a health scare from tracks.
In the latest incident, one of the parents told Shanghai Daily that more than 100 children in Pujiang Town No.1 Kindergarten suffered from cough, asthma, allergy, vomit and nosebleed since September.
Gu Zhongying, the principal of Pujiang Town No.1 Kindergarten, said they were testing the quality of the track. “The children’s safety is our priority so we have transferred them to the other campus.”
He refused to say how many children fell sick because the investigation was still on going. “It could well be the weather, the track, or something else,” he said.
Minhang education commission said it had taken track samples and will reveal the results after 10 days.
A father of a 3-year-old child, surnamed Lu, said his son was coughing all the time since mid-September and later found rashes on his body.
Initially, Lu said he did not think it was linked to the tracks as the symptoms vanished during the National Day holiday. But they were back on the first day he went back to the kindergarten.
He later found out that other students in the kindergarten had similar issues.
But the parents were not happy with the conditions in the main campus after the children were moved.
“The campus is not large enough to house the extra kids. We are not sure if it has been approved by the education authority, fire control and disease control departments,” a parent said.
