Stem cell donor found in shortest period of time

A 32-year-old local man donated stem cell today to save the life of a leukemia patient, who was in critical condition after fulfilling all preparation for a stem cell transplant but the original donor changed the mind suddenly. It is the 384th stem cell donation in the city.

It only took six days for the donor and his family to give consent, receive health checkup and pre-donation preparation and give donation, said officials from Shanghai Branch of Red Cross Society of China, which runs stem cell donor’s bank. This created a new record of the shortest time to finish the whole procedure which usually takes two to three weeks.

Local red cross officials said they received the emergency requirement on Saturday and contacted Zhu Guiren, a government official in Songjiang District, immediately. Zhu is the second matched donor on the list.

Officials went to Zhu’s home at night. He expressed his consent to give donation at once and persuaded his family to agree with his decision.

“We are moved by his behavior,” said Zhang Haoliang from Shanghai red cross. “He hasn’t any hesitation in giving donation.”

Zhu said he signed up to join the stem cell donor’s bank in 2014 and “has prepared to give donation any time,” he said.
