Soggy start to Qingming holiday, mercury set to drop

The three-day Qingming Festival holiday will have a soggy start but will end with the mercury falling below 20 degrees Celsius when a cold front rolls into the city from Sunday, forecasters said.

The showers will hit the city on Saturday night before tapering off on Sunday morning. Some parts of the city are likely to see heavy downpours.

Shanghai woke up to a dense fog today, which was caused by city’s high humidity. The yellow heavy fog alert issued last night was upgraded to orange by the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau at 4:28am, forecasting a visibility of less than 200 meters. The visibility was soon cut to below 300 meters in most of the city at 6am, affecting local traffic and flights.

The foggy condition eased up three hours later after a sunbreak and most districts, other than Chongming County and some riverside or coastal areas, saw their visibility restored to upper 2 kilometers. The orange alert was lifted at 9:15am.

On Saturday, Shanghai will mainly be dominated by a warm air mass and the high is expected to remain at 22 degrees. At dusk, it will start to rain with the possibility of thunder later in the evening. A rainfall of 20 to 40 millimeters is expected at the weekend and heavy to torrential rains are likely to strike parts of the city.

Skies will dry out late on Sunday with the arrival of the cold air. The mercury will drop to 16 degrees. The cloudy weather will last until Monday with the high increasing a bit to 18 degrees.

On Tuesday, the wet condition will return with the mercury climbing back to 20 degrees.
