Shanghainese traveler killed while hiking near a 80m waterfall

A Shanghainese traveler perished after he was drawn towards a waterfall in the Xianju County in neighboring Zhejiang Province while hiking down the waterfall on Sunday morning.

The 35-year-old man worked for a sports goods company in Shanghai and he did the canyoning along with another 15 adventurers in the 80-meter-high Zhukengli Waterfall in Danzhu Village, Xianju police reported.

The other tourists are safe and investigation is underway.

As there is no mobile phone signal in the place and a villager ran one whole kilometer to alert the police.

The waterfall is turbulent with a steep cliff under it, and the rescue team including local villagers had to clear a way in the bushes to approach the man after finding it difficult to reach the bottom of the cliff directly. It took them more than one hour to walk to the bottom.

The man was hung 10 meters above the bottom of the waterfall and there was a vast whirlpool formed by the water impact in the bottom, causing rescue members unable to reach him.

Nevertheless, they fixed a rope between canyons and approached the man finally.

The man was found dead after his body was taken out at 5pm.

Rain is frequent in Zhejiang Province these days due to the annual plum rain season, and adventurers of outdoor sports should evaluate risks based on the weather and geographic conditions, experts reminded.
