Shanghai will keep its population within 25 million in next 5 years

SHANGHAI will keep the population of local residents within 25 million during the next five years for a better living and working environment, Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong said.
By the end of 2014, the city has had 24.26 million residents, including those with registered residency and migrants staying the city for over six months. Without control, the population could surge to at most 26.5 million by the end of 2020, Yang told Party cadres at the 10th plenary meeting of the 10th Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China.
The central government initially announced to strictly control the size of population of China's large cities during the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Communist Party of China Central Committee in late 2013.
"The city government can take several measures, such as standardizing employments, demolishing illegal residential buildings as well as cracking down on group renting to control the unreasonable migrant population," said Wang Jianping, director with the Shanghai Statistics Bureau told ThePaper.cn.
The 25-million target was worked out according to the city's population changes and annual growth in recent years. The city's size, resources and layout have also been taken into account, Wang said.
The city's population has surged by over 8 million since 2000. The new target means the city can receive at most 743,200 more residents for the next five years.
