Shanghai shrouded by heavy fog

FLIGHTS were delayed and highways were forced to close yesterday morning as heavy fog descended on Shanghai.

Weather forecasters issued a fog warning for the city, which remained in place until 10:30am, as visibility, even in downtown areas, fell to as little as 200 meters.

Flights were delayed at both Hongqiao and Pudong airports, while a Juneyao Airlines flight was rerouted from the former to the latter because of poor visibility.

Schedules returned to normal by about 8am as the air began to clear.

The worst of the fog was reported in Chongming County, where all water traffic was temporarily halted and public buses struggled to get out of second gear.

Across the city, a number of highways were closed until 10:30am, while drivers were urged to switch on their fog lights and keep their speed to a minimum.

In the Lujiazui financial zone, many of the city’s landmark buildings, including the Shanghai Tower and Jin Mao Tower, appeared as little more than ghostly shadows, while all but the lowest sphere of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower was visible through the fog.

Forecasters pointed out, however, that the poor visibility was the result of fog and not a haze, which is caused by dust or other particles in the air.

The air quality index peaked at 110 yesterday, indicating light pollution.

After the foggy start, Shanghai ended the day in sunshine and a top temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.

Today and tomorrow are expected to be warm but wet, though the mercury will drop to 13 degrees on Tuesday.
