Shanghai blames northwesterly winds for heavy pollution in the city

SHANGHAI struggled with heavy air pollution since noon on Monday with tiny PM2.5 particle the major pollutant. The environment authority said winds from north China brought in the pollutants.

The city’s Air Quality Index touched 221 by noon, surpassing 200, the index for heavy pollution standard. It soared as high as 232 by 1pm.

The air quality monitoring spots in Putuo District and the Pudong New Area both reported a PM2.5 density surpassing 200 microgram per cubic meter, while the city average is 182 -- over seven times the WHO recommended standard, which is 25 micrograms per cubic meter.

Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said the major cause of pollution was northwest winds from the provinces. Chinese cities Beijing and Tianjin, provinces Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi and Shaanxi all reported heavy smog for days.

The center said the situation should improve slightly on Tuesday. However, a cold front on Wednesday will bring the pollution back into the city.
