Rain belt has left, cloudy sky will return: forecasters

THE overnight heavy rain has tapered off to drizzles now after the rain belt left the city and kept moving southeastwards quickly, forecasters said.

Cloudy sky is expected to return this afternoon.

After two yellow alerts for lightning and rain storm were respectively issued at 9:50pm and 11:55pm last night, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau upgraded the yellow rain storm one to an orange one -- the second highest in a four-color system -- at 5:19am today. It's the city's first orange rain storm alert this year, the bureau said.

The flooding condition caused by the storm is not serious and only a few streets saw some flooding.

But the stormy weather still affected some flights at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. By 8am this morning, 15 flights set to arrive at the Pudong airport were transferred to land at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport or some other neighboring airports.

Meanwhile, delays also affected some trains.

After the rain weakened, local weather bureau lifted the two alerts at 7:45am.
