Pudong launches community health program to help improve children’s asthma treatments

The nation’s first community-based children’s asthma management program was established yesterday, the World Asthma Day with standardized diagnosis, treatment and monitoring available across 14 neighborhood health centers in Pudong New Area.

Patients visiting these health centers can receive both health care in line with city-level children’s hospitals. A better smart phone application for patient management is also available. The app will keep all details of the children’s condition and treatment and allow parents to consult doctors online conveniently.

Officials said the asthma program is the first step for the district to set up a community-based disease prevention and control program for children’s common and chronic diseases.

There are over 200,000 asthma children patients in Shanghai with over 45,000 in Pudong. The incidence of asthma for local children almost doubled in the past decade to 7.57 percent.

“Asthma is a controllable disease requiring proper and long-term managemen,” said Zhao Liebin, vice president of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, head of the program. “About 90 percent of Chinese children with asthma are not under proper health care, because parents are reluctant to repeatedly take them to the city’s crowded major children’s hospitals always with long lines. But these children still need regular treatments.”

To push children’s asthma management, the district government introduced this program, under which SCMC set up standards and offered training to neighborhood doctors and supervise their practice.

“The majority of children’s asthma is of a common type, which can be diagnosed and treated under standardized guidance. If patients can receive good and convenient service at neighborhood health facilities, the condition of children’s asthma will improve greatly,” said Dr Zhang Hao from SCMC’s respiratory disease department.
