Police nab man illegally storing, selling methanol

A man in suburban Shanghai has been arrested for illegally storing 8 tons of methanol, police said on Thursday.

The methanol was stored in 2-meter-tall plastic barrels in a factory on Fengsong Road, Huaxin Town, Qingpu District. Police discovered it last week in an inspection of rented factories, shabby sheds and container trucks in this area.

Police said it turned out to be methanol of the concentration of 99.9 percent which is highly cumbustable at room temperature.

The suspect, a man surnamed Zhou, doesn’t have the legally required licenses for transporting and selling methanol, which is a listed dangerous material in China.

Zhou had allegedly sold 200 kilograms of diluted methanol pumped into iron cans to local restaurants as fuel for dishes heated on the table.

Police said they’re still investigating the origin of the methanol.

If criminally convicted, Zhou could face at least three years in prison.
