No new cases of infection in Shanghai

There were no new cases of coronavirus infection in Shanghai in the past 12 hours as of midday yesterday, the Shanghai Health Commission said.

Meanwhile, another 22 suspected cases have been ruled out, it added.

So far, the city has reported 335 infections and ruled out 2,184 suspected cases.

Among all confirmed patients, aged between 7 months and 88 years old, 144 have traveled or lived in Hubei Province, 33 have traveled or lived in other regions, and 158 had contact history with infected persons.

A total of 111 patients are from outside the city, while 224 are local residents, which include those with registered residency and people staying in the city for over six months.

According to the commission, 58 patients are stable, four are in serious condition and nine are critical. A total of 261 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital.

There have been three local fatalities so far. Another 77 suspected cases are undergoing tests.

Zheng Jin, a spokeswoman for the commission, told an online press conference yesterday that hospitals can’t simply ban relatives from visiting or accompanying hospitalized patients but must ensure patient safety and infection prevention while taking into account patients’ actual demands.

“Relatives can apply to the head nurse for approval for visit while patients in serious condition or those who need a meeting before surgery can arrange for their relatives to visit in required time. For those who really need company, hospitals should allow each patient to have a designated company with proper protective outfit and information registration,” Zheng said. “In this special time, we also need understanding from the public.”
