Network set up to target fetal congenital heart disease

CHINESE leading pediatricians and heart disease experts set up a national diagnosis and treatment network in Shanghai over the weekend targeting fetuses being detected with congenital heart disease during prenatal check. The network is to classify fetus’ disease, give parents guidance to avoid unnecessary abortion and arrange follow-up and appropriate treatment.

The majority of prenatal diagnosis centers and pediatric heart disease treatment centers in the nation are included into the network.

The detection rate of congenital heart disease during prenatal check rose by over three times in the past decade in China, thanks to the improvement of technology. However, a lack of guidance caused many women blindly aborted fetuses with treatable heart diseases or delivered some children with extremely complicated heart disease with poor treatment results and gave strong burden to the family.

Congenital heart disease is the leading birth deformity in China and covered 27 percent of total deformity. Every year, nearly 300,000 fetuses are detected with suspicious heart problems demanding scientific direction.

“Since obstetricians don’t have deep understanding on heart disease, our network is to intervene before the child is born, give professional opinions for parents to avoid blind abortion and guide the follow-up treatment,” said Dr Liu Jinfen from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, leading facility of the network. “About 10 to 20 percent of cases can heal by themselves. Among the cases needing surgery, over 90 percent can have very good results and children can grow up like normal children.”

“We hope the network can reduce the mortality of children below five years in China and improve our population quality,” Liu said.
