Name list of city stores for overseas tourist tax refund announced

OVERSEAS tourists shopping at 27 department stores and souvenir shops in Shanghai will be entitled to 11 percent tax refund if their purchase exceeds 500 yuan starting from tomorrow, as the city announces the first batch of shops involved in the scheme today.
These shops are in commercial areas, scenic spots and community gatherings for overseas tourists. Authorities today have announced a name list of local shops for the refund service.
The tax can be claimed at the city's two airports, namely, Pudong and Hongqiao.
It is expected to be expanded to the Shanghai Railway Station and ports while the scope of shops will be further expanded, authorities stated.
Local souvenirs, Chinese medicines, porcelain, tea leaves and silk are among the most popular products among overseas tourists to the city, officials added.
Overseas tourists will from tomorrow be entitled to tax refunds on selected purchases made in Shanghai on their departure from the country, the General Administration of Customs of China said yesterday.
The 11 percent VAT rebate applies to purchases of 500 yuan (US$80) or more made on a single day at a participating store, they said.
Foreign tourists and those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, who stay in the Chinese mainland for no more than 183 days, can receive a rebate of 11 percent on consumer goods purchased at designated department stores, according to an MOF statement earlier this year.
Refunds can be claimed on departure, which must be within 90 days of each purchase made.
The introduction of the new scheme, which launches concurrently in Beijing, follows a trial program introduced in 2011 in Southern China's Hainan Province.
