More city officials investigated for corruption in 2014

The number of Shanghai officials investigated for corruption increased 9.1 percent in 2014, according to Chen Xu, chief prosecutor of the Shanghai People’s Procuratorate.

Chen said city prosecutors investigated 442 people in connection with 354 corruption cases last year.

The officials included five bureau directors and 37 department directors, Chen said in an annual report to local legislators.

Two bureau directors and 16 department officials were found guilty and sentenced to prison terms.

Wang Zongnan, former president of Shanghai Bright Food Co Ltd, was charged in October with taking bribes worth nearly 2.7 million yuan (US$432,505) and embezzling some 190 million yuan. No verdict has been reached in the case.

Eighty people were investigated for offering bribes to officials last year, up 20 percent from 2013.

A total of 1,089 people were arrested for serious criminal offenses including murder, robbery and hijacking, he added.
