Mom and infant survive severe pregnancy complications

A 45-year-old woman was saved after receiving a nine-hour emergency rescue with transfusion of blood two-and-a-half times of her own during an extremely risky obstetric complication while delivering her second child, Xinhua Hospital announced.

The patient was removed to normal ward today after staying in the intensive care unit for over two weeks. Both she and her newborn daughter, who was delivered on June 6, are in stable condition.

Hospital officials said the old age, a history of cesarean operation and repeated abortions are major risky factors for severe obstetric complications. Since the government allows all couples to have a second child last year, the city’s hospitals saw about 20 percent of increase of pregnant women with highly risky conditions. Most such cases are women older than 35 years old, pregnant with the second child and with a history of obstetric surgeries.

The patient, who was identified as Yu Ping, delivered her son 21 years ago in her home town of Anhui Province through surgery. She was detected with pernicious placenta previa during the prenatal check after being pregnant with her daughter.

It is one of the most serious complications of cesarean operation. The incidence is only 1.7 in every 10,000 pregnancies among normal women, but it takes place among every 20 pregnancies among women older than 35 with a history of cesarean operation.

“We receive several such cases every month right now as many women in their 30s and 40s are having a second child under the new policy. The high rate of cesarean operation in China in the past decades imposed many potential risks during their second pregnancy,” said Dr Wang Lei from Xinhua Hospital’s department of gynecology and obstetrics.

Yu was hospitalized in Xinhua since 24 weeks of pregnancy. She started to have severe bleeding at wee hours of June 6. Though the fetus was only 32 weeks, doctors had to terminate pregnancy, or both the mother and child can die.

Experts from multiple departments rushed to the hospital to perform treatment.

After taking the child out, Yu had a serious bleeding. Doctors conducted surgery and transfused over 10,000 milliliters during the whole procedure while an adult’s blood volume is 4,000 milliliter.

“We never thought the pregnancy can almost kill my wife and our baby. I’m grateful to all medical staff,” said the husband surnamed Wang.
