Missing Shanghai college student confirmed dead after villagers hired by family found his body at hillside

THE Shanghai student who went missing 10 days ago during a trip on his own to Huashan Mountain in Shaanxi Province, is dead, a relative told Shanghai Daily today.

Zhu Xianfeng's body was found at hillside about 150 meters under a place known as Yingzui Peak, where he was last seen on a surveillance footage at 2:49pm on January 25, said Zhu’s elder cousin Wang Wei.

Some local villagers hired by the victim's family found his dead body.

“Police told us he might have slipped from the peak to death,” Wang said in sorrow.

Local police confirmed Zhu’s death with Shanghai Daily but would not provide more details.

Wang said that Zhu’s body was found by five local residents around 2 pm this Wednesday, five to six hours after the family hired them to search for Zhu.

Zhu, a 24-year-old student from Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, had travelled to Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi, on his own on January 20. Family said he told them he had booked a ticket to fly back to Shanghai and was due to board the flight on the evening of January 25. But he never showed up at the Shanghai airport and had since been out of contract, the family said.

The family rushed to the mountain resort later and reported his missing to local police on January 27. A team of 200 people was said to have been formed to search for him but their effort was halted by heavy snow three days later. Wang said management staff of the scenic spot had suggested them to wait until April to resume the search when the snow would have melted, but relatives insisted on continuing the efforts and hired the local villagers for the search on Wednesday.

The villagers went into the mountain at 9am and reported to the family that they had found the body around 2 pm below the Yingzui Peak, he said.

Zhu’s body had been sent to a funeral parlor.
