Minhang cleans up stinky illegal dumps near school

FOUL-SMELLING illegal dumps in Minhang District have been cleared following complaints from a school.

Authorities now plan to create green areas on the sites and install surveillance systems to prevent truck drivers from illegally dumping domestic waste.

One student at the High School attached to Shanghai Normal University said he couldn't eat his lunch because the stench made him nauseous.

Another said he found it hard to concentrate because of the stink.

The school was surrounded by more than 20 illegal dumps, most on waste ground between Sanlin in the Pudong New Area and Pujiang in Minhang.

Several large sites have been cleared following media reports last month and the others are set to go, said officials.

Students said the smell is now gone.

Authorities in Pujiang Town said that more than 200 truckloads of garbage were removed from one of the biggest sites.

The remainder will be gone within two or three months and they are currently looking for new sites, according to officials.

Authorities also plan to set up other businesses in the area to replace waste-related enterprises.
