Metro ticket prices may be altered

SHANGHAI’S subway operator said it plans to use different ticket prices to encourage commuters and their companies to stagger working hours in a bid to help reduce overcrowding during rush hours.

Discounts will be offered during non-peak hours while higher prices will be charged during rush hours, said Shao Weizhong, vice president of Shentong Group, which operates the city’s Metro trains.

"We are still waiting for coordination from the city government to carry out the scheme," Shao said on the sidelines of the Shanghai People’s Congress.

A daily average of 8.4 million trips were taken on the subway last year and the number is expected to reach 9 million this year, according to Sun Jianping, head of the Shanghai Transport Commission.

Lawmaker Hu Min proposed work start times based on sectors like education, factory, medical, office and entertainment.

The Shanghai Government Development and Research Center, or the city government’s think tank, has said it will consider staggering work hours in a bid to help reduce traffic congestion during rush hour periods.

However, the traffic commission said further improvements to public transportation would be more helpful in alleviating traffic jams.
